All of the work except for the Wiki Project we worked on at the beginning of the semester has prepared you for this final paper. The research proposal guided your research and sealed the boundaries of what you would be discussing while the Annotated Bibliography enriched your understanding of your specific topic. You must have read about many scholars’ rhetorical positions on your topic and of course you should include many of their major talking points in your paper, but remember, this paper is mostly about what you have learned and what you have to say about what experts have already said. How do you comprehend your topic
What has enriched your understanding and how
What can you add to the scholarly discussion
Your ideas are just as important as the writers you quote BUT it is important that you support your ideas with evidence. These are the reasons for conducting scholarly research.
Goals:
-show that you have read and grasped scholarly material on your topic.
-indicate that you can appropriately weigh in with your own understanding of your subject alongside scholarly sources that you use to support to refute evidence. (Make sure you properly use quotes! The Purdue MLA format guide is on BB, please make sure you consult this frequently. You should have at least 10 quotes (think about a quote per page as the bare minimum but makes sure you don’t make this paper completely composed of quotes, your perspective is most important!) from at least 5 sources in this paper.
-prove that you can undergo the trials of research and report back what you have learned in an academic way, with cohesive introductions that connect with the following body paragraphs that flow out into a cohesive conclusion that acts as a bookend to your introduction.
I like to think of academic papers this way: Your introduction is a table in which ideas are displayed. These ideas are supported by both the quality of this table as well as the quality of the legs used to support the whole platter of ideas equally and sufficiently. Your conclusion is the foundational floor on which it all rests.
