Post-colonial Artist Research Paper(opinionated): Malcolm X
Choose a political leader (MALCOM X) that was involved in an anti-colonial
independence movement. In your introduction, introduce the leader and
contextualize their actions within the broader anti-colonial movements of
the 20th and 21st centuries. Also, write a thesis paragraph that establishes
the two pieces of writing/speeches you will analyze and generalize their
connection to postcolonial culture. In the body of the essay, you need to
analyze two specific pieces of writing or two of their speeches (could be
one of each) explaining how their words engage with and reflect some of
the major concepts of postcolonial ideas/theories (use appropriate terms).
In your conclusion, evaluate the impact the political leader has had on
human societies (their social impact).
The 5 sections of the paper(please label them):
Section 1-Identify your artist or political leader and explain why/how they represent
postcolonial culture. In general explain their artistic/political career and put them into a
broader context of 20th century and 21st century postcolonial culture. [One or two
paragraphs]
Section 2-Deliver your thesis, which will zero in on two works by your artist or political
leader. Your body paragraphs will analyze the works and explain how they represent
postcolonial themes. You may use the “In this paper I will…” structure for your thesis.
[The thesis can be in a separate paragraph OR at the end of a second section 1
paragraph.]
Section 3-Analyze two works by your artists or political leader. Be sure to make specific
references, if possible quotations, and explain how the works represent postcolonial
culture. Be sure you sprinkle your analysis with the PC terms you have. At the
beginning of your second paragraph in section 3 you need to have a transitional phrase.
[Two paragraphs, possibly three or four.]
(please include malcolm X speech: the bullet or ballot )
Section 4-In your concluding paragraph you need to accomplish two things. First
generalize the impact of the artist and their work. How have they contributed to
postcolonial culture? What is their impact on society? (Be specific about times and
places.) Next, finish the paper with an explanation of how the artist and their works have
affected you personally. How does the work of the artist or political leader speak to you?
[One or two paragraphs.]
Section 5-You MUST have a bibliography and use in text citations. The bibliography
needs between four and seven sources. Also, you need an appendix which presents the
artworks/political writings or speeches (visual arts, written pieces, speeches). For the
appendix, you can have links or you can copy and paste the works.
