Note: Make sure you’ve listened to/read the supplemental podcast/articles on the Content page under Part 2… Week 5 before beginning this assignment.
This week we discussed different aspects of and approaches to environmental advocacy campaigns. One of the main points of debate is where environmental advocacy should be directed. On one hand, individual action is a relatively small part of environmental impact and sustainability (compared to business and government impacts), but if people feel like what they do doesn’t matter, they can become hopeless and less likely to engage in advocacy efforts at other levels. Institutional (businesses and government) action contributes a larger part of environmental impact and sustainability, but is more abstract and seems far away from individuals, and institutional inertia (e.g. current inaction) can seem overwhelming. Accusations of hypocrisy, and whataboutism abound – it is easy to point out that environmental action is not happening at one level as justification for inaction or an argument that it is not worthwhile at another level.
These are daunting challenges for environmental communicators and advocacy campaigns. Where should the limited resources of environmental advocates and communicators be directed
How should we appeal to and ensure buy in from, eventually, all parties
Do you believe that bottom-up or top-down strategies are or will be more effective

What perspectives, examples, individuals or groups discussed in the text, lecture, and supplemental materials this week were most compelling to you and why
