How others see Elain Eye

As we learned in the last part of the journey, we are heavily influenced by those around
us in how we think and understand the world. Most would argue that the “self” is an evolving
and multifaceted phenomenon highlight influenced by our relationships, how we see ourselves in
light of others, feedback we receive from others, and what we choose to project to others. Mead
(1934) identified these types of influences as the generalized particular other. Rules, roles, and
attitudes adopted by group affiliations represent the generalized other. We started to uncover the
generalized other in the last exercise on worldviews. The particular other includes people close
to us, that play a significant role in how we develop our personal perspective and self-esteem.
Particular others reflect or mirror back to us certain perceptions of how they view us an dwe
respond in turn.
From a biblical persepective, identifying personal motivating values aligns with the
commands of Galatians 6. In the letter to Galatians, Paul exhorts the members of the Galatian
church to watch themselves and other members to remain true to God. In the same manner,
identifying our personal motivating values and having others reflect what they see provides us
with a good check of the outward expression of our internal spiritual wellness.
Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham (Luft, 1969) attempted to explain the ideas of how we
communicate self in a concept called the Johari Window. Johari’s Window has four components.

  1. Open Self: The self that everyone can see, including you yourself. (What God has revealed to
    you and others)
  2. Hidden Self: The self that we know but don’t want others to know. (What God has revealed to
you but you have not openly shared to others. Maybe a gift. Maybe a sin struggle).
  3. Blind Self: The self that others see but we do not. (What God has shown about you to others,
    but you cannot see yourself.)
  4. Unknown: The self that is not yet known to us or others. (What has not yet been revealed
through lack of experience or need to draw upon. Maybe good or bad.)
