• A full introductory paragraph explaining the relevance of your essay’s topic to the reader and introducing the text’s title, author, genre, exigence, audience, and purpose. This intro should include a thesis statement in which you take a position on how Douglass achieves his purpose with his target audience.
• Four titled sections (which might be multiple paragraphs), each possessing the following qualities:
• A claim about how rhetorical choices achieve a specific, distinct subpurpose
• Evidence illustrating key rhetorical choices from multiple chapters in the text
• Analysis explaining how words/phrases/details impact the audience to achieve the intended impact
• Transitions between paragraphs explaining how each subpurpose/impact leads to the next. Over the course of your essay, your transitions/analysis should explain how subpurposes/impacts build on each other to achieve the overall purpose
• A conclusion paragraph that restates your line of reasoning and highlights its contemporary relevance.
• A Style Choices Table in which you identify your usage of specific phrases/clauses (see Step 3 below for details).
