It is not uncommon for team issues to exist, as many individuals are coming together trying to perform to the best of their ability, in conjunction with individuals who may have different viewpoints, cultural backgrounds, experiences, work styles, etc. Scenario At a large healthcare institution, nursing staff members work collaboratively together on their individual units. While some units work better together than others, collaboration, effective communication, and strong relationships are essential. Each unit is comprised of 15 full-time Registered Nurses (RNs), 30 part-time Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and 10 full-time Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Additionally, there are 5 full-time administrative staff members on the unit and 30 rotating Medical Doctors/Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine. The units of this hospital are huge. Recently, you learned that on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), many cliques have formed. Furthermore, as reported by the Lead Nursing Manager, on the unit, bullying continues to occur. It is not uncommon for senior nursing staff members to haze younger/newer nursing staff members in hopes of dominating their authority. None of the newly hired nurses will discuss who is involved in the hazing. Unfortunately, as the Human Resource Director, lacking information presents a difficult situation. For this assignment, consider the following: What impact can bullying and hazing have on individual nurses, the team of nurses, and the organization as a whole What metrics might be utilized to assess/further determine what is occurring in the ICU Develop a team intervention that can be utilized to improve the unit’s culture. When determining the most appropriate intervention, also explain why the selected team intervention should result in improved employee experiences and an improved organizational culture. Note: There is a great deal of research regarding bullying in the workplace, specifically in the healthcare field. You should rely upon this research when responding to the questions above. |
